Church Lettering
St Lawrence
We avoided the issue of ecclesiastical lettering in
Ipswich until we
glanced
up at this lettered tower. A double
whammy.
Here is a growing selection of church lettering from around Ipswich.
Clearly
churches are crammed with memorials and graves, so we will choose the
more
outré examples for this site. Such as the lofty 'S' and 'L' used
as our background on this page.
St Peter's
Church opposite the
lower neck of St Peter's Street displays gothic lettering in brick,
stone and flint.
St
Matthew's Hall in Clarkson Street has fine,
eccentric lettering.
There's a nice obscure piece of carved
lettering outside St
Clements
Hospital in Foxhall Road which marks the boundary of the unfeasibly
large
St Clements parish based at the Parish church on Grimwade Street. Such
things
happen, no doubt when you have three large parish churches within about
a mile along the northern edge of the Wet Dock (including St Mary at
Quay
and St Peters).
Our Lady of
Ipswich Echoes of a time when pilgrims travelled
to Ipswich to
worship at the
shrine
of Our Lady. Also the almshouse opposite St Mary At Elms in Elm Street.
We'll also include some choice pieces of lettering from
church carvings
where possible/visible.
The background shows pale versions of the 'S' and
'L' of St Lawrence
church.
